My Dog Is Very Clingy! Should I Be Worried?

Why does my dog smoosh his face into my pillow or elbow?

Dogs get near their owners to hug and show love. It can also mean that they feel anxious and need comfort from their owners. Some dogs also love the smell of their owner’s arm or any other object with their scent. Another reason would be that dogs were accidentally trained to do this behavior.

Why is my dog so clingy?

Dogs show emotions in many ways, but one of the simplest ways is by coming up to their owners and snuggling up with them.

When your pup is cuddling up with you and pushing its face to yours, this can be interpreted in several ways, which we’ll dive into in this short article.

They’re trying to show affection

Dogs are very social animals and thrive on developing relationships with their humans, other dogs, and animals.

They’re also predisposed to be a part of a pack and will, therefore, be bonded to whoever they think is part of their group.

Dogs show affection by:

  • Hugging.
  • Cuddling.
  • Licking your face.
  • Pushing their face into yours.
  • Putting their paws on your hands.

These are only a few examples of how dogs show love and affection.

They feel anxious

Like humans, dogs can feel anxious, too. This can be caused by several factors, such as:

  • Loud noises.
  • Medical problems.
  • Lack of socialization.
  • Being in an unfamiliar place.
  • Having someone unfamiliar around.

Generally speaking, when dogs feel too exposed or vulnerable, they can approach you and seek comfort. They sometimes do this by smooshing their snouts into your arms.

Sad dog

If your pup does this frequently and is just starting to do it recently, you might want to bring them to your vet. This is so you can rule out any medical issues that may cause their clinginess toward you.

They love your smell

To canines, scents are how they see the world. We humans mainly see the world through our eyes. On the other hand, dogs use their heightened sense of smell to be aware of their surroundings.

They also use smells to recognize people and other animals around them.

When your furry friend smells you, they might feel comfortable and show this by resting their head on your arms or chest.

It can also mean that they noticed a new scent on you and are trying to study the smell.

They were trained to do this

You may not have trained your dog to smoosh their face into you, but you might have done it accidentally.

“How could this have happened?”

Canines respond positively to treats and rewards and repeat behaviors that produce these.

You or anyone in your home might have accidentally conditioned your dog by giving them treats whenever they push their face into their arms.
