I Found Bugs In My Dog’s Food - What Do I Do?

How do you get bugs out of dog food?

While weevils are generally harmless to dogs and humans, it is still best to remove them from your dog’s food bag. You can do this by putting the infected bag inside your freezer. This can slow down and eventually kill the bugs. Then, transfer their food into a new airtight container for safety.

What are the bugs in my dogs food?

The most common bugs that contaminate dog food containers are called weevils. They are very hardy creatures that thrive in places where they find a good food source.

They don’t necessarily only target dog food bags. Weevils and other bugs in their family love being in dry places, which is why you’ll most likely find them inside your pasta bags, rice containers, and other dry food items.

It can get frustrating whenever you find these pesky bugs inside your dog food packages. However, there are some things you can do to remove them and keep them away quickly.

“I need the fix now! Please help me!”

The best thing to do is expose your dog’s food to extreme temperatures—either really hot or really cold.

“I can’t boil my dog’s food, can I?”

No, you can’t.

This is why the best option here is to freeze the infested dog food. This helps slow down the bugs’ reproduction and eventually kills the existing bugs. To ensure all the bugs are gone, you should freeze around 5-7 days.

You can then pick out each dead bug from the dog food container and throw it outside. It would be better if you burned them to prevent them from coming back.

How do I keep bugs out of my pet food?

The best solution for keeping bugs out of your furry friend’s food is to transfer the goodies to an airtight seal.

Try to find those with rubber gaskets so moisture won’t penetrate. It’s also best to use glass jars, which are excellent containers because rats won’t nib on them.

As much as you can, keep the dog food container out of areas where moisture is present such as:

  • Basement.
  • Crawl spaces.
  • Under the sink.

Most pet owners leave their dog food in its original container. And while this is perfectly OK, this exposes their food to humidity and high temperatures. Both of these are the perfect ingredients for weevils and other bugs to survive in your dog’s food.

You can also opt to use an automatic feeder for your pups. This way, you can control the amount of dog food you’ll expose to the elements and keep the rest of their food inside the feeder, safe from insects, dust, and other contaminants.
