Bloody Spots On My Dog’s Skin - What Are These?

What are the bloody spots on my dogs skin?

There can be many reasons why your dog has a bloody spot on their skin, but all of them are due to health and medical reasons. One could be external injury or trauma. Another one may be a skin infection or a parasitic infestation. Lastly, it could be dermatitis or an allergic reaction.

What causes bloody spots on dogs’ skin?

Injury or trauma

Have you found some bloody spots on your dog's skin?

Though there can be many reasons why there are bloody spots on your dog's skin, one of the reasons may be injury or trauma.

Bloody spots can be caused by external traumas, such as:

  • Scrapes
  • Cuts
  • Bites
  • Punctured wounds

But how can they acquire these?

They can usually get it from outdoor activities, playing or fighting with other dogs or animals, or accidents.

Skin infections

Aside from injuries, skin infections can also be one of the leading reasons why your dogs have blood spots on their skin.

Whether it is a bacterial or fungal infection, both can cause blood spots on animals.

The most common for both are pyoderma and dermatophytosis, also known as ringworm.

These types of infections can cause things such as:

  • Pustules
  • Lesions
  • Ulcers

All are known to cause bleeding in animals like dogs.

They can develop in parts where a dog's skin is the most warm and moist and are poor regarding ventilation.

Parasites

The third reason could be parasites.

Parasitic infestation is typical of dogs that are not groomed properly and regularly.

So, when your dogs have some blood spots on their skin, you should immediately check out for parasites, such as:

  • Ticks
  • Fleas
  • Mites

They can all irritate, scratch, and itch, leading to your dogs having blood spots on their skin.

In particular, a flea bite can result in some dogs having an allergic reaction, leading them to have severe itching and inflammation on their skin, which can also turn into bloody lesions.

Dermatitis

Last but not the least would be dermatitis, also known as allergic reactions.

Allergens, such as:

  • Environmental allergens (pollen, grass)
  • Contact allergens (shampoos, chemicals)
  • From certain foods

It can all cause dogs to develop an allergic reaction.

Allergic reactions in dogs can be in the form of:

  • Itchiness
  • Inflamed skin
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bloody spots due to excessive licking and scratching

If your dogs show any of the signs, you should bring them to a veterinarian, as they have a better knowledge of how to treat them.

How to avoid skin problems in dogs?

So, how do you protect your dogs from having any skin problems?

As dog owners, we should believe in the motto that "protection is always better than cure."

Here are some of the ways to do it:

  • Ensure proper and regular grooming.
  • Give them a balanced diet.
  • Provide flea and tick prevention.
  • Minimize their exposure to allergens.

If your dogs start having some blood spots, immediately bring them to a veterinarian, as this is the best way to prevent the infection from worsening.
